A U.S. Springfield Trapdoor rifle in .50-70 Government, serial 24616, produced at Springfield Armory around 1868 to 1870 with a 32.5-inch round barrel. The breech is marked 1870, while the lock plate is dated 1863, a leftover Civil War part. The bore is frosty in the grooves but the rifling stays strong, and the action works as it should.
Condition is honest rather than polished. The metal has thinned to a brown patina with oxidation around the front barrel band. The stock keeps its original finish under heavy impression marks, including a large gouge on the left side of the butt. The supplier grades it good overall. For a Texas collector of US martial arms the dated breech and lock tell their own story, and it displays well as it is.
