Choosing a home defense gun in Texas

The right home defense gun is the one you can store safely, reach quickly and shoot well under stress. This guide compares the main options for Texas homes. It is general information, not legal advice.

The pistol

A full-size 9mm pistol with a weapon light is the most practical choice for most homes. The Glock 17 and 19, SIG P320 and Smith and Wesson M&P all fill the role well.

The AR-15

A carbine in 5.56 is light, accurate and easy to control, with 30 rounds on board and a light mounted. Defensive loads fragment and often penetrate fewer walls than people expect, but you must still know what is behind your target.

The shotgun

A 12-gauge pump with buckshot is powerful and simple, though it recoils hard and holds fewer rounds. A 20 gauge is easier for smaller shooters.

Storage

Texas law makes it an offense to leave a loaded firearm where a child under 17 can reach it in some circumstances. Use a quick-access safe by the bed and lock up every other gun.
