Two hundred fifty-four counties, no permit, no wait: Texas is an easy state to buy a pistol in; the harder question is which one. CZ has just given the 9mm service class a new option with the DUTY 4.0. It is striker-fired, in 9x19, and built on a serialized internal chassis so the fiberglass-reinforced polymer grip frame is modular. The slide is cut for direct-mount optics with fixed sights as backup, and the 4-inch barrel is not threaded. The refined SFDA trigger pulls at 5.6±0.9 lbs, travels 9±1 mm and resets in 4 mm.
Houston and Beaumont carry buyers usually look at the compact DUTY 4.0 C first, 15+1 rounds (17+1 extended), 770 g and 135 mm tall. Dallas, Fort Worth and Plano nightstand buyers lean toward the full-size DUTY 4.0 F, 17+1 rounds (19+1 extended), 780 g and 143 mm tall. Austin, Georgetown and College Station buyers tend to pick by hand size. Each size is sold with a manual thumb safety (MS) or without. New release, $729 MSRP.
The C is the compact frame. It stands 135 mm (5.3 in) tall, weighs 770 g (27.2 oz) unloaded and carries 15+1 rounds of 9mm, or 17+1 once the longer base plate is fitted. Short enough to hide under a shirt, long enough to get every finger on the grip.
This is the version with a manual thumb safety. The three internal safeties (firing pin block, trigger safety, trigger-bar safety) are the same as on every DUTY; the lever is an extra for people who were trained on one or simply want one.
Three things define the DUTY 4.0. First, a serial-numbered modular chassis: the serial-numbered part is inside, the frame module around it is modular. Second, the trigger, a striker SFDA rated at 25 ± 4 N (5.6 ± 0.9 lbs), 4 mm (0.16 in) reset, 9 ± 1 mm (0.4 ± 0.04 in) travel, which is short and repeatable for a service pistol. Third, a direct-mount optics-ready slide, shown by CZ with Holosun, Aimpoint and Shield dots fitted, so a optic sits low without a stack of plates.
Best fit: concealed carry where your state allows it, home defense, and range time that does not need a service-size grip. Shooters coming from a CZ 75 will recognize the grip angle; buyers coming from any other striker gun will notice the trigger first.
No purchase permit, no waiting period: that is Texas. Pick the Texas dealer you want at checkout and the DUTY 4.0 ships to that FFL; your dealer runs the NICS check at pickup. Magazines, optics and ammo ship to your door. What you pay is the live-confirmed price, checked against stock as you order.
Questions buyers ask: Is the DUTY 4.0 a good first carry gun in Texas? The C is a mid-size 9mm at 770 g with 15+1 and a 5.6 lb trigger, which is a sensible starting point. Check Texas carry rules and ask your dealer about holsters that fit a red dot. Does the extended base plate come standard? CZ lists the C at 15+1 standard and 17+1 with the extended base plate, and the F at 17+1 and 19+1. Check the listing for what ships in the box with the model you choose. What does MS mean on the CZ DUTY 4.0 C MS? Manual safety. It adds a thumb lever to the firing pin block, trigger safety and trigger-bar safety that every DUTY has.
